Welsh stand-up Bennett Arron's stage show Jewelsh has been adapted for radio and is to be broadcast over the next two weekends.
Arron has a unique perspective on life as he is both Jewish and Welsh. No joke. Although it is the starting point for jokes. And being Jewish and Welsh means Bennett is never quite sure why he is being beaten up. In this series Bennett explores the foibles and insecurities of this seldom-seen cultural mix. Each episode takes a comic look as to how he fits in, or tries to fit in, to different areas of British life using stand-up comedy interspersed with sketches and music from Fiddlebox.
To enhance the idea of two battling cultures within Bennett’s one head, two additional voices are featured regularly. Rather than an “angel” on one shoulder and a “devil” on the other, in Bennett’s world, he has a “Rabbi” on one, and a “Dragon” on the other. Both voices crop up whenever Bennett needs advice or to give him help from their particular perspective.
The programmes follow Arron from his Port Talbot childhood where his was the only Jewish family and where a young Anthony Hopkins used to light his grandparent’s fire, through to his day spent as a grave-digger. Described as “A Welsh Seinfeld” by the Guardian and “Genuinely Original and Funny” by The Times, Bennett’s unique comical perspective will have you laughing in a way only a Welsh Jew can do. The programme also features Caroline Berry and Vern Griffiths.
Jewelsh is to be broadcast at 1pm on Saturday, 27th June and 4th July on BBC Radio Wales. It will also be available after broadcast on iPlayer. Listen to part one here.
