6. What do your parents think of your job?

I’m fortunate enough to have incredibly supportive parents. So much so, I had to move hemispheres to get away from their suggestions for jokes.

7. What’s the worst thing about being a comedian?

The admin. It’s about 80% of the job.

8. I think you are very good at what you do (that’s why I’m asking these questions). What do you think of you?

In all honesty, I feel like I’m pulling off the world’s biggest grift. I look at some of the line-ups I’m included on and I’m like, “I don’t deserve to be here.” I feel like I’m selling fake handbags or something. One day people are going to inspect my “jokes” more closely and be like, “Hang on a second! These are poorly constructed! FRAUD!!!” And then there’ll be a scene of me running out of a comedy club chased by people with pitchforks.

9. How much do you earn and how much would you like to earn?

I earn enough to live and enjoy myself, but not really enough to save. I’d like to earn enough so that if I’m ever heaps sick or badly injured and can’t gig, I won’t die immediately from hunger.

10. How important is luck in terms of career success – have you had lucky breaks?

I think I believe in serendipity more than luck. I believe we are presented with opportunities which we wouldn’t otherwise get if we didn’t put in the initial work. That said, I have been very lucky to have some [name-dropping redacted] ...wonderful people in the industry... champion me. I’ve had some great jobs and meetings which have come about from those people pushing me forward to their contacts and followings, unprompted.

11. Alan Davies has said that comedians fall into two categories - golfers and self-harmers. The former just get on with life, the latter are tortured artists. Which are you – or do you think you fit into a third category?

Hmm... I think it’s more complex than that. I see it more as “Friends” characters. There’s the Monicas who take it so seriously, they forget to enjoy it. The Joeys who don’t take it seriously enough. The Rachels who get all the breaks and still complain about it. The Rosses who overthink everything and try too hard. The Phoebes who focus too much on their art and too little on their audience. And then the Chandlers, who focus too much on their audiences and not enough on their art. ...And then there’s Gunther, who is just super happy to be involved.

12. Who is your favourite person ever and why - not including family or friends or other comedians?

Duh. Jesus. Unless you count Him as a friend or family member. In which case... Pete Conrad, the 3rd man to walk on the moon. His first word on the moon was, “Whoopee!” Which I think is just swell.
