It’s tempting to put performers into a box. I was thinking about that when I wrote about Joseph Morpurgo and the same applies to David Elms. I first came across Elms at the Musical Comedy Awards in 2014 when his dry-as-a-desert songs won him first prize. I immediately had him down as a comic songwriter, but then I saw him in Nick Mohammed’s Dracula (Mr Swallow) The Musical and realised that he can act too. In fact he is also the star/writer of indie movie Swag, which has been doing the rounds of the film festivals. Given that Elms is primarily a wordsmith the curious thing about Swag is that it is wordless – it’s about a wimp whose personality changes when he dons a new cap. Anyway, all of this is a roundabout way of saying that Elms is definitely a name to watch. He says that his latest show, Mister Boy, “seems to be about marriage and adulthood, but actually it's about compromise and then at the end you find out it's all been about love.” Sounds very moreish to me.
David Elms is at The Invisible Dot tonight with Mike Wozniak, tickets here, and at The Pleasance from Aug 5 - 31, tickets here.
