Interview: Rarely Asked Questions – Joe Lycett
It’s really only a matter of time before Joe Lycett becomes a household name. The Birmingham-born comic has been building up a right old head of steam over the last few years. He has become a TV regular doing the usual stand-up showcases as well as the panel game circuit and has got that common touch – in a good way – that means that he can be a bit mean and people still warm to him. His storytelling material ranges from the observational to the campaigning. He seems to have carved out a bit of an unlikely niche for himself doing waspish material about parking infringements. If only That’s Life! was still around he would be a shoo-in as one of Esther’s boys. In the meantime I suspect he will be fronting his own high-profile series before the decade is out.
1. What is the last thing you do before you go onstage (apart from check your flies, check for spinach between teeth and check your knickers aren't sticking out of your skirt)?
I snort a dangerous amount of antihistamines, send a message to everyone in my phone book telling them I love them and that I'm sorry, and step out into the hell mouth.
2. What irritates you?
Very little annoys me so I get very, very annoyed when someone else gets annoyed because I don't understand why they're annoyed.
3. What is the most dangerous thing you have ever done?
I once drove over myself in my own car. God knows how I survived but it was probably because it was a dream.
4. What is the most stupid thing you have ever done?
I have never ever done anything stupid in my life.
5. What has surprised you the most during your career in comedy?
That comedians are far kinder and more understanding than I had imagined.
