To be perfectly honest I don’t know why I’m bothering to tip Joe Lycett. Partly because I’ve only just run a fabulous interview with him here, but mainly because he hardly needs my help. Not even coming from Birmingham is going to hold him back. Lycett is obviously a star-in-waiting, it is just a matter of time and there is nothing on earth anyone can do to stop it. He’s got a unique selling point – he’s bisexual – but he doesn’t make a major deal about it. Instead he prefers to tell inventive anecdotes and riff on the problems he has had with various parking authorities and other major organisations. He can be catty, but he has a way with words and a turn of phrase that means he is never nasty. I always feel there’s a game show host in Lycett busting to get out, but before he gets sucked into mainstream telly and smoothed over catch him while he still has some endearingly rough edges.
Joe Lycett is Downstairs at the King's Head with Stuart Goldsmith tonight, tickets here, and at The Pleasance from Aug 5 - 30, tickets here.
