Edinburgh Preview: Chris Ramsey

When it comes to the Fringe it always feels as if there is an underlying tension between the arty acts and the straightforwardly crowdpleasing stand-ups. Earlier this week I read a debate on Facebook about whether Roy “Catchphrase” Walker should be doing Edinburgh. I guess the proof is in the commerical pudding. If they shift tickets they’ve made the right decision. I wouldn’t put Chris Ramsey in the Roy Walker camp  but I would put him in the Jason Manford/John Bishop camp. In a Good Way. Like his fellow northerners – and Sarah Millican, who like him comes from South Shields – Ramsey is the kind of comic who just seems to get up onstage and tell stories his life. Though, of course, there is a lot of work involved in getting this right. And like them, the often snobby Edinburgh Comedy Award judges shortlisted him for their main prize, proving that he can win over the chin-strokers as well as those just wanting a giggle. His last show centred on how he got kicked off Sky’s Soccer AM for being rude. It’s hard to imagine such an eminently amiable man being rude, which is perhaps why the yarn was so funny. His latest show, All Growed Up, goes on tour in the Autumn and looks at how Ramsey is coping with being an adult. He warms up for the tour with a run in Edinburgh and warms up for the run in Edinburgh with this gig. Need a laugh? Ramsey should be right up your street.

Chris Ramsey is at The Pleasance, N1 tonight with Matt Forde, tickets here, and at Assembly George Square from Aug 20 - 30, tickets here.
