6. What do your parents/children (delete as applicable) think of your job? 

My Dad would have probably liked it I think. Pre 'Herbert' I'd been doing some sketch comedy, characters, some telly bits and bobs and commercials but he still used to take the piss and ask me when I would get a proper job. I used to find it annoying because I was getting by and paying the bills. Even though I was doing alright, the defining moment when he changed his mind and told me I could do this entertainment stuff was when I sang a cover of Love Cats by The Cure in a band called the Ronnie Scotts Rejects. Never mind writing my own TV show, he needed two bottles of wine and a dance floor and that was him convinced. I'm gutted he never got to see any Herbert. He was a very funny man and could have been a performer on stage. As it turned out he was an undercover copper, and by all accounts, one of the best. 

Mum and stepdad Carl never pushed my academically at all. But they always encouraged me to fight back at school when dealing with bullies at the various schools I went to and they always seemed happy when I was singing or acting. As a result I had more than my fair share of black eyes and choir solos. Fast forward to doing the show in London and they are chuffed. The have never seen me live. But they are coming to London for the Soho Theatre gigs.

My two-year old son waits by the door when I am about to go out to gigs with a little case of his own. He tells me he wants to come and he has props to take with him. Then he shows me what he will do on stage. Part of me melts and thinks its lovely. The other half thinks: 'I am creating a monster.’

7. What’s the worst thing about being a comedian? 

Come on! I'm not going to moan about it. I wanted it, lots of people dream of doing it, I am a very lucky man to be able to have the chance to be a plonker for a living. There’s loads of work involved but there is in any job if you love it. But right now I am enjoying it while it happens. This time next year everyone might hate me! I'm sure loads do already. Fair play to them.

8. I think you are very good at what you do (that’s why I’m asking these questions). What do you think of you? 

I don't know what I think of me, but I try to be polite and considerate. I try to keep an open mind and keep learning. I try to be like all the people I have met that make me happy. I think I have a mantra in my subconscious that is saying over and over 'Don’t be a dick, don’t be a dick'. It's really easy to become a dick. I fight my inner dick every day....

9. How much do you earn and how much would you like to earn? 

Currently I don't earn enough to fix the roof, but I earn enough to feed the family. How much would I like to earn? I'd love to fix the roof and take the family away for a week to the seaside.

10. How important is luck in terms of career success – have you had lucky breaks? 

Luck is really important in career success. Its equally as important as working clever. If you are working clever a little bit of luck will come along. Then you must work clever on that bit of luck.

11. Alan Davies has said that comedians fall into two categories - golfers and self-harmers. The former just get on with life, the latter are tortured artists. Which are you – or do you think you fit into a third category? 

Tortured artist sadly. I absolutely have to work on creating something every day, even if it’s just for an hour. If I don't get that fix I start to turn into a dick. I find myself thinking horrible thoughts and snapping at my lovely family. The only thing that keeps it at bay is playing golf. I haven't hit a ball in 3 years. My bloody family keep getting in the way, they really get on my nerves, just the sound of their voices... errghh.

12. Who is your favourite person ever and why - not including family or friends or other comedians? 

Sylvester Stallone. Why? Watch the first Rocky movie. A love story, an underdog story, emotional, funny, uplifting. The film and Stallone’s story is an inspiration to anyone down on their luck but with dreams I reckon. I know I sound like a prat to some people, and that’s okay, but just watch the film. And if you've see it before, watch it again, on your own. I've watched that film 50 times easy. Rocky is a very funny man. And dead hard. Good combo.

13. Do you keep your drawers tidy and if not why on earth not?

I just went round the house and counted 23 different drawers. And every one was a complete and utter shambles. Apart from the cutlery drawer. No problems there. I'm in and out of that one all day long. The rest of the drawers I only look in when searching for batteries and the card reader thing for the bank card.
