A new comedy featuring young people living together? If you are looking for something to fill a Peep Show-shaped void in your life I’m not sure if Crashing will do the job. It's fun but the cast is far too good looking. This new series focuses on the lives and mainly the loves of a group of people who have circumvented high rents by becoming property guardians and are living in a disused hospital.
It’s a topical set-up and one that is handy for both drama and comedy as it throws together a group of mismatched individuals. Among those we meet in the first episode are ukelele-playing Lulu, straight Kate and Sam (Jonathan Bailey), who is so obnoxious he just has to be an estate agent.
Actually there’s a bit more depth to Sam, but it’s a long time coming. The main storyline in the first instalment focuses on Lulu (played by writer Phoebe Waller-Bridge), who arrives from out of town and finds herself quickly involved in what looks like a potentially icky love triangle with Anthony (Damien Molony) and Kate (Louise Ford).
The introductory episode is a heady, high energy mix of alcohol and smutty talk. Also looking like good value are French artist Melody ((Julie Dray), shy Fred (Amit Shah) and middle aged Colin (Adrian Scarborough), who is going through a messy divorce.
I guess the nearest comparison is not Peep Show or Friends, but Fresh Meat with a slice of Skins tossed into the mix for good measure. It’s a comedy but also a bit of a state of the nation piece. These people aren’t dropout squatters, they mostly hold down responsible jobs but simply can’t afford to pay rent or are trying to save for a hefty mortgage. The social comment is kept to a minimum though. The emphasis is more on sharp uninhibited dialogue, flirting and drinking gallons of tequila. Looks good to me. This is anything but a Crashing bore.
Crashing, Mondays from January 11, 10pm, C4.
