6. What do your parents/children (delete as applicable) think of your job?
My Mum loves it. She is so proud. She often tells the neighbours "Oooo he went to London and back in a day!" or "Have you seen Live At The Apollo, well he did a gig with someone else who knows someone who said they might be in the next series if things go well."
7. What’s the worst thing about being a comedian?
The family and friends and partners have to suffer. It is such a selfish job where you are here, there and everywhere...it takes someone understanding and brilliant to put up with that and support you.
8. I think you are very good at what you do (that’s why I’m asking these questions). What do you think of you?
I think...hmm...I think I am getting better, and getting a grasp of what it means to be a good comic, but I have so much more to offer and do and create. I love doing it, and suddenly I have realised that it is a hobby that has got out of hand.
9. How much do you earn and how much would you like to earn?
I earn less than a reviewer asking cheeky questions. I would like to earn more than that reviewer who is asking cheeky questions.
10. How important is luck in terms of career success – have you had lucky breaks?
Lee Mack said (not to me, on the telly) that "The harder he worked the luckier he got." And I think that is mostly true. There are some incredible stand ups on the circuit who work so hard, but they just never got a lucky break...and some terrible ones in the lime light who did. I have been super lucky, the fact that I have don't have a mortgage, children, a family to support...and that gives me the freedom to be able to do this.
11. Alan Davies has said that comedians fall into two categories - golfers and self-harmers. The former just get on with life, the latter are tortured artists. Which are you – or do you think you fit into a third category?
I think I am in my own category. I don't JUST drift, and I am not 100% tortured. I grew up in quite a rough area, where people are born there, they work there, they marry the person who lives down the road and then they die. So I think that the fact I have got out of there, makes me feel dead fortunate that I get to do the thing I love, so I never rest on my laurels like a golfer, and I don't beat myself up every day like a self harmer. I am perfectly placed in the middle.
12. Who is your favourite person ever and why – not including family or friends or other comedians?
Most of my favourites are family and friends, hence why they are family and friends. I don't have a favourite favourite, but my favourite type of people are kids. Just before the world has seeped into their brains. When everything is amazing, and they will do a shit cartwheel for no reason, or sing a song no one has ever heard. That gives me a little bit of joy.
Either them or the person that is going to put Vanessa Feltz down.
13. Do you keep your drawers tidy and if not why not? (this is to settle an argument with my girlfriend. If you've taken my side thank you in advance)
Yes. I am crippling tidy. First thing I do is make my bed. Second thing I do is make sure all cushions are straight. Third thing is make sure my drawers are tidy. This is a chaotic job, so a little bit of order is needed...don't treat your drawers like a bin for your dreams. I have a feeling I am on your girlfriend's side*. Sorry...but seriously, clean your drawers.
*No, I'm the annoyingly tidy one like you.
