Interview: Rarely Asked Questions – Aditi Mittal: Page 2 of 2

6. What do your parents (delete as applicable) think of your job?

My dad is hopelessly proud. It takes very little for tears of joy to come sliding down his face when he hears of me doing well. My mother is still not sure what I do - she still asks me when I'm planning to get a real job.

7. What’s the worst thing about being a comedian?

Other comedians. If I wanted to hang around with someone who is needy for attention, insecure, trying to constantly one-up everyone around them and irritatingly confident without any discernable reason, I would just look in the mirror, you know?

8. I think you are very good at what you do (that’s why I’m asking these questions). What do you think of you?

I think I need a nap.

9. How much do you earn and how much would you like to earn?

Will joke for food.

10. How important is luck in terms of career success – have you had lucky breaks?

The fact that I come from a country of 1.7 billion people, out of which a handful get the perfect set of circumstances- privilege of birth, economics, social and cultural conditions - to do what they really love to do and make a living from it - technically the fact that I EXIST is a MASSIVE stroke of luck.

11. Alan Davies has said that comedians fall into two categories - golfers and self-harmers. The former just get on with life, the latter are tortured artists. Which are you – or do you think you fit into a third category?

Self-harmer for the win! How else do you explain wanting to do a job that keeps you on the road most of the year - the subsequent loneliness of hotel rooms and airports, the constipation of the missed morning bowel movements, the utter inability to form non-cynical, long term relationships and the abuse of laughter as a defence mechanism to hide my actual thoughts and feelings?

12. Who is your favourite person ever and why – not including family or friends or other comedians?

My favourite person ever is my boyfriend, because he's standing over my shoulder watching me type this.

13. Do you keep your drawers tidy and if not why not? (this is to settle an argument with my girlfriend. If you've taken my side thank you in advance)

Not. What's the point it's going to get untidy again anyway. I like the idea of untidy drawers because every time you pull out something from the pile - it's a surprise
"oh yes! I haven't worn this for weeks!" OR
"ooohhh! I don't even remember buying this" OR
"ooohhh is that a beer and why does it have a man's underwear wrapped around it?"
and so on.
