News: How Much Stand-Up Did Sadiq Khan Really Do?
The organiser of Stand up for Labour has taken issue with Sadiq Khan's claim that he once did stand-up comedy.
A recent video released by Time Out featured the London Mayor saying that he had done stand-up. But Crispin Flintoff, who puts on the fundraising Stand up for Labour gigs around the country and is currently involved in the Jeremy Corbyn For PM campaign, says that this is not quite how he remembers it. Posting on Facebook yesterday Flintoff said: "He was a speaker who told a few jokes."
Talking to Beyond The Joke Flintoff elaborated: "Sadiq Khan appeared at several Stand up for Labour gigs from 2013 to May 2015 (Tooting, Chiswick, Paddington, Sutton, City of London, Battersea, Greenwich, Lewisham). We always have a speaker at our gigs to put the night in context. We've had Neil Kinnock, Jeremy Corbyn, Hilary Benn, Caroline Flint, John McDonnell - people from across the party spectrum.
Sadiq preferred to do a political speech that contained a few jokes in it. The jokes were at the expense of people like Boris Johnson or Jeremy Hunt. Arthur Smith said flatteringly after one gig in Tooting that Sadiq could make it as a club comic. But he was never booked for comedy. He did present the Stand up for Labour Act of the Year award last year (pictured here, pic by Phil Bourne). The winner was Patrick Monahan.
Since he stood for Mayor he hasn't taken up any offers to speak (or perform jokes) at any gigs. I almost feel like he used Stand up for Labour to make a name for himself among Labour members and, once he was selected as Mayoral candidate, dropped it.
I'm a Jeremy Corbyn supporter (as you probably know) and I'm not very happy with his endorsement of Owen Smith. Jeremy Corbyn's leadership has seen audience numbers boom; if Owen Smith were leader there would be hardly anyone to hear anyone's jokes."
