6. What do your parents/children (delete as applicable) think of your job?

My family is actually pretty proud of me. They’ve supported me since I started. My mum will often attend my shows multiple times in one festival. This year in Melbourne was a record low – I think she only came five or six times across the 25 show run. I’m slipping..

 

7. What’s the worst thing about being a comedian?

It can be pretty lonely on the road. Also, it’s difficult to complain to your partner about your day at work - when you work for an hour a night. And that hour ends in a room full of people applauding your shift. 

 

I think I’m OK. I feel like I’m still very young as a comedian, and I have lots of learning to do. But you’ll never see that on any of my press releases or posters. 

9. How much do you earn and how much would you like to earn?

I earn more than enough, and enough is less than what I earn. Wow, I’m so clever.

10. How important is luck in terms of career success – have you had lucky breaks?

Luck is important. Right time, right place, all that – I agree with. Comedy is definitely an industry, and like any industry, it’s not purely a meritocracy. All of my breaks have been lucky to some extent.

11. Alan Davies has said that comedians fall into two categories - golfers and self-harmers. The former just get on with life, the latter are tortured artists. Which are you – or do you think you fit into a third category?

Mainly golfer. It’s hard to not hate yourself after a tough gig though.

God. God’s not a person, but is also beyond comprehension.
