6. What do your children think of your job?
My three year old daughter seems to enjoy announcing “Daddy does a rap show about consciousness” at awkward times during social events. People seem much more open to the idea when she explains it than when I do.
7. What’s the worst thing about being a comedian?
The shifting goalposts of what it means to have “made it".
8. I think you are very good at what you do (that’s why I’m asking these questions). What do you think of you?
I’m the best in the world at what I do. All the other white, middle-class, Canadian rappers doing science-themed hip-hop comedy at the Fringe are second-rate.
9. How much do you earn and how much would you like to earn?
I grossed $95K US from gigs last year. How much did I net? Ask my creditors.
10. How important is luck in terms of career success – have you had lucky breaks?
None of the breaks I’ve had were anything other than luck. The only thing you can work on is your readiness to be fortunate.
11. Alan Davies has said that comedians fall into two categories -golfers and self-harmers. The former just get on with life, the latter are tortured artists. Which are you – or do you think you fit into a third category?
I’m a golfer, definitely. I just torture my audiences.
12. Who is your favourite person ever and why – not including family or friends or other comedians?
Geoffrey Chaucer and Charles Darwin are my literary and scientific heroes. Between the two of them you have a complete picture of what humans are and do.
13. Do you keep your drawers tidy and if not why not? (please think long and hard about this question, it's to settle an argument with my girlfriend. The future of our relationship could depend on your response).
Yes, because my wife makes me.
