It sometimes feels that Lucy Porter has been doing Edinburgh almost as long as me. And in some ways she has. The first time I met the TV and radio regular I was on the Perrier Awards – remember those? – panel and she was a quietly efficient assistant sorting through the gig diary and arranging tickets for harrassed judges. It is to her eternal credit that the chaos of the Fringe didn't put her off comedy. In fact she threw herself into stand-up with a vengeance. Me Time is her tenth show, though she has had the common decency to take a bit of time off to have a couple of children. Inevitably when she returned after becoming a parent (and getting married) some of her material revolved around parenthood (and getting married), but Me Time is a different kind of show. The twinkly but deceptively feisty gagsmith wonders whether she was born in the wrong era and ponders on whether she would have been happier as a Victorian explorer or an Egyptian Pharaoh. At least that is what it says in her Fringe advert. Whether it turns out to be the actual show when she gets to Scotland may depend on how much you laugh at her free preview at Angel Comedy tonight. Who knows, she may end up doing more jokes about parenthood (and getting married). Not that that would be such a bad thing.
Lucy Porter is at The Stand from July 31 to August 10. Tickets here.
