Well, if Monty Python can make a comeback why can’t Nick Revell? The satirical stand-up was one of the leading lights of the alternative comedy circuit in the 1980s. He then went into TV and radio and carved out a career for himself as a writer and disappeared from the live scene, but he has been back onstage and as strong as ever in the last few years. His eye for a comic target and a pithy well-informed bon mot is still sharp and now he has a bit of middled-aged wisdom as a garnish. He is also getting to grips with social media as one of the co-creators of the No Pressure to Be Funny topical podcast. His new show, Closet Optimist, may not necessarily set the comedy world alight – though it might – but it will definitely showcase a master at work, someone who can deliver a cohesive critique of society’s ills without just ranting or being mindlessly angry. Young comedians might have more hair, energy and tighter trousers, but you can’t buy years of experience from a stylist. Update: Nick Revell was due to preview at the Bird of Smithfield tonight but has just told me he isn't doing it. Follow him on Twitter @nickula for gig updates.
Nick Revell is at the Assembly Rooms from July 31 - August 24. Tickets here.
