I’ve been intrigued by Shappi Khorsandi ever since she first made waves on the stand-up circuit around a decade ago. She has a fascinating background – coming to the UK as an Iranian refugee because of death threats against her satirist father. Every show she has done has been different. She drew on her family history for a while, but then when her own life took some unexpected turns she drew on that. One year there was a bit about her divorce from a fellow comic, including one of the funniest and earliest jokes about iPhones. Her show a couple of years ago was about her unexpected sexual awakening when she had a relationship with a promiscuous rock star who had so many women coming and going, as it were, that he used to keep a lost property box in his hallway. Khorsandi’s private life seems a little more settled these days. In fact she missed Edinburgh last year because she became a mother again. So no major details of what this year's show, Because I'm Shappi. is about, except that it is about the people that have helped her pursue her dreams. But rest assured that dispatches from the Khorsandi front line are never less than interesting. And funny too. She is at Red Imp Comedy tonight with Paul Sinha, whose set isn’t a preview as he isn’t doing Edinburgh this year.
Shappi Khorsandi is at the Pleasance Dome from July 30 - August 24. Tickets here.
