I’m afraid this is another of those Edinburgh Fringe Previews that isn't quite what it seems. London-based Canadian Ryan is doing a short run in Edinburgh but has already completed a proper run at the Soho Theatre with her latest show, Glam Role Model. I saw it on the very first night and it felt like a bit of a work-in-progress then, a potentially great set in search of a suitable ending. Word has it that Ryan has found the ending since then. She is also becoming an increasingly assured performer – she stormed it at the Palladium on Saturday night supporting Chelsea Handler. Her current show, like shows by Bridget Christie and Sara Pascoe, explores a woman’s place in the world, but Ryan does it in a much more in-your-face style, pulling the rug from under us, acting out each vignette and giving her stories an extra oomph. And for a relative newcomer to stand-up on television she already has a trademark routine under her belt thanks to her brief Live at the Apollo set. I suspect she sells a lot of tickets on the basis of her bump ’n’ grind Beyonce routine alone. And there is nothing wrong with that whatsoever. She plays The Bowler Hat tonight.
Katherine Ryan is at The Stand from August 1 - 7. Tickets here.
