Edinburgh Fringe Preview: Kerry Godliman

kerry godliman

I first spotted Kerry Godliman over a decade ago when she was in a short-lived Evening Standard-sponsored comedy competition. Greg Davies - whatever happened to him? – won, but I was impressed by Godliman’s cheery, accessible everywoman brand of feminism. She had a particularly good gag about anti-gravity face cream. If it was so gravity-defying why wasn’t it floating above the cosmetics counter? More recently she has become best known as Hannah, the sympathetic manager in Derek. But she is still doing stand-up and doing it better than ever. Her material still deals with the everyday – juggling work and kids, buying washing machines. Godliman tells jokes that everyone can relate to, but they are much more than just trite observations. A couple of months ago she supported David Brent & The Foregone Conclusion at the Eventim Apollo and while most of the punters were still in the bar the ones that saw Godliman’s brisk set were the winners. She plays the Balham Comedy Festival tonight.

Kerry Godliman is at The Stand from August 12 - 24. Tickets here.
