TV: The Return Of Blankety Blankety, BBC One

When Les Dawson took over from Terry Wogan as the host of Blankety Blank he famously snapped Tel's legendary lengthy microphone as soon as he began. Now that Bradley Walsh takes over for this full series following the success of a one-off pilot last Christmas I wonder if he will come up with anything as memorable.

I've nothing against Bradley Walsh but I'm pretty amazed that suddenly he seems to be top of almost every TV producer's go-to wish list, whether they are looking for people to appear on Dr Who or to host TV shows. Walsh already has The Chase in the bag and now he has this primetime game show too. If anyone can shed any light on the rise and rise of Bradley Walsh please let me know. He seems to be even more busy than Romesh Ranganathan.

Anyway, he's got a pretty good line up of guests on this show which will give it a mix of alternative and mainstream flavour. In the first show the guests filling in the blanks are Adjoa Andoh, Martine McCutcheon, Johnny Vegas, Jimmy Carr, Chizzy Akudolu and Joe Swash. Johnny Vegas should supply a bit of anarchy, Jimmy Carr should supply a few slick one-liners. As it's post-watershed, airing at 9pm, it might be a little ruder than the original version that tended to go for innuendo rather that outright filth.

Further down the line comics Rob Beckett, Josh Widdicombe, Rhod Gilbert and Joel Dommett are also set to appear. Blankety Blank is the latest in a number of revived TV formats. Sky recently dusted off Never Mind The Buzzcocks with Greg Davies now in the hot seat. I wonder if Bradley Walsh was offered that as well and was too busy to fit it into his schedule.

Blankety Blank, BBC One, Saturdays at 9pm from October 2.
