There was a mixed response to Liverpool comedian John Bishop's appearance in the second episode of the current series, Doctor Who: Flux, starring Jodie Whittaker as the time travelling star Doctor.
Matty Kudasai tweeted: "Parents have flicked on to Dr Who because there's a scene in Liverpool. Idk if they wanted to get in the city's good books you'd think they'd cast a Scouser instead of John Bishop."
Amie Brock tweeted: "What the hell is John bishop gonna do with that frying pan, that won’t defend himself from the sontarans #doctorwho"
Lisa Witttner noticed a Liverpool soap connection: "your screen mum is the actress who played Jackie cork hill in brookside."
As did Emma Hardy, sort of: "#brookside reunion on #doctorwho !? @JohnBishop100 #jackiecorkhill" Although we don't actually recall Bishop ever appearing in Brookside.
And Steve said: "I see Jackie Corkhill has regenerated as John Bishop’s mum"
Paul Draper noted a football connection shortly after West Hame beat Liverpool on Sunday afernoon: "Unlucky with injuries Paul, however I’m watching @bbcdoctorwho at the moment and noticed The Sontaran’s chasing @JohnBishop100 round Liverpool, hovering above Anfield trying to get in. If this doesn’t prove most Liverpool supporters aren’t from Merseyside, I don’t know what does."
Richey Hackett thought he spotted a plot-hole:"The Doctor makes a point of saying “Sontarans are bred for war and they are very good at it!” Also Sontarans, two scenes earlier; can’t hit John Bishop running at a slow pace barely 5 metres in front of them."
And Steve Marsh agreed: "Sontarans are very good at war - except the half dozen of them that had clear shots on John Bishop, all missed, and were promptly taken out by a couple of pensioners with kitchen utensils."
Stephen Best tweeted: "God love John Bishop but he's not an actor is he? I can only assume his casting is some typical BBC woke, snowflake crap to get those underrepresented Scousers on television. #DoctorWhoFlux"
Voice of the Mysterons passed their verdict: "Somewhat ironic that #DrWho is full of different time streams and multiverses, yet John Bishop's performance has already turned out to be resolutely *one* dimensional ... "
Doctor Who (with John Bishop) is on Sundays on BBC One.
