Hold the bloody front page. A comedian did not win Richard Osman's House of Games last week. Comics have a great track record in this show but Rachel Fairburn and Des Clarke were pipped at the post by Kimberley Nixon. I lost my bet. I put my shirt on comedian Rachel Fairburn.
So who will triumph this week out of Sarah Kendall, Jay McGuiness, Linda Robson and Bobby Seagull? My heart says Sarah Kendall, but my head, I'm afraid, says Bobby Seagull. After all, Seagull did come to fame by showing how intelligent he was on University Challenge. Maybe he should even give the others a head start.
By contrast Sarah Kendall has just shown people how witty and clever she is with her award-nominated Edinburgh Fringe shows and her hit Sky comedy Frayed, which draws on bits of her own life growing up in the Australian town of Newcastle.
Kendall ia pretty smart, then, though I'm worried about he flared trousers she is wearing in the picture on this page. If there is a gust of wind in the studio she might blow away. Though hopefully her voluminous hair – it's not a wig, whatever some people might think – might help to hold her down.
Comedians have a terrific track record on this show, often coming out as winner. Angela Barnes made House of Games history in late 2020 by becoming the first contestant to win all five of their episodes. Other winners include Chris Washington, who appeared in TV's Nationwide ad campaign, and Cariad Lloyd, who is best known for hosting her Griefcast podcast.
But Kendall is up against tough competition this week. Don't discount Birds of A Feather veteran Linda Robson or Jay McGuiness, the singer/songwriter from The Wanted. The odds-on favourite might be Seagull but anyone here could fly to victory.
