Should Quiz Stars Like Bobby Seagull Be Banned From Richard Osman's House of Games

Yesterday I wrote a short preview about this week's Richard Osman's House of Games. I tipped Bobby Seagull to do well on the basis that he had quizzing form, but I didn't expect him to do as well in the first episode as he did. Seagull notched up 13 points to win the opener, comedian Sarah Kendall and The Wanted's Jay McGuiness scored five each and Linda Robson from Birds of a Feather scored three points.

It could have been worse for Robson. At one point when she seemed to be randomly shouting out "shishkebab" I feared that we might see someone ending with a negative total, but she rallied in the end and was more respectable. She might still want to talk to her agent about what kind of programmes she should appear on in the future though.

My main concern is the inclusion of maths teacher/boffin Seagull in this week's contest. I assume that stars of other quiz shows have appeared before, but I've never seen one. Seagull made a splash when he was one of the breakout stars of University Challenge so he clearly has a smart brain.

I'm not actually saying we should ban Seagull. He seems like a lovely man. But he's just too damn clever for this show. Perhaps when players with a quiz show track record appear on House of Games they should be handicapped. Start them off on minus five points. Or minus ten if they have won Celebrity Mastermind. The others deserve to have a chance surely.

But who knows, let's see how Bobby Seagull does in the second episode later today. Maybe if he is soundly thrashed by Linda Robson I will delete this article.

Update: Well, what do I know. Jay McGuiness won Tuesday's show and Bobby came second. I still think Bobby will be overall winner though.

Wednesday update: another win for Bobby...
