News: "Dapper Laughs Is Gone"

Dapper Laughs

In his first major TV appearance since the announcement that there will not be a second series of Dapper Laughs On The Pull Daniel O'Reilly, the man behind Dapper Laughs, has told BBC2's Newsnight that "Dapper Laughs Is Gone". In an interview with Emily Maitlis O'Reilly attempted to distance himself and draw a line under the controversial character that has been accused of misogyny, sexism and condoning rape.

Maitliss put various charges to O'Reilly, who was clearly shaken by what has happened to him in the last few days. "It's wrecked my life," he said of the media storm. He claimed that things had got out of hand and that while he was all for pushing boundaries, maybe he had pushed them too far and lost perspective: "I didn;'t realise I was causing that much of a problem."

His appearance, clean-shaven and in sombre jacket and black trousers, felt very much like damage limitation. While he accepted responsibility for what he had done, he appeared a little stumped when Maitliss also raised the issue of O'Reilly's father sending offensive tweets. He was also unable to offer much in the way of defence when the YouTube clip of him saying to a woman in the audience at one of his gigs that she was "gagging for a rape".
