Frank Williams, who famously played the reverend Timothy Farthing in Dad's Army has died, aged 90.
A Facebook post said:"So sorry to say that our beloved friend, colleague and actor, Frank Williams, passed away this morning.
"He was almost 91, and we are grateful for all the years of joy, laughter and happiness he brought to so many. Thank you Frank!"
Williams (pictured right) also appeared as an archer in Ivanhoe (1952), which was coincidentally on TV today, starring Elizabeth Taylor and had a small role in The Story of Gilbert and Sullivan (1953).
Williams appeared in 39 of the 80 TV episodes, the first Dad's Army film, the stage show and 14 radio episodes. He also appeared in the reboot in 2016 and said: "It meant four days work, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The film was pretty successful but received a mixed reaction from Dad's Army fans because seeing other people playing roles made famous by the likes of Arthur and John wasn’t easy to accept."
Morris Bright, chairman of Elstree Studios, tweeted a picture of Williams with fellow cast members: "Sadly just one left of these delightful bringers of joy, as we say goodbye to Dad's Army star actor Frank Williams who has died aged 90. Here with Ian Lavender, Bill Pertwee & Clive Dunn at a plaque unveiling to co star John le Mesurier in 1993. Happy memories of a wonderful day."
He was also in the TV comedies The Army Game, You Rang M'Lord and Hi-De-Hi!
Ian Lavender, who played Pike, is now the only surviving member of the main cast.
