Comedian Joe Lycett is set to take part in the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in his hometown of Birmingham.
Lycett revealed the news on Heart Breakfast with Jamie Theakston and Zoe Hardman (standing in for Amanda Holden).
During his interview, Lycett revealed his involvement and spoke of his pride for his home city as it prepares to host the Games. The comedy prankster also said he’s “panicking” about the number of viewers who will be tuning in to the Opening Ceremony around the world.
Here is a transcript of the conversation:
JT: Jamie Theakston
ZH: Zoe Hardman (in for Amanda Holden)
JL: Joe Lycett
JT: Joe, big day for your hometown of Birmingham on Thursday night at the Commonwealth Games!
JL: Yeah!
JT: You must be a very proud man…
JL: I'm really proud! It's sort of odd isn't it, to sort of be proud of where you come from in some ways, because it's like I didn’t choose where I was born, but I am really thrilled for Birmingham at the minute, it seems like a really exciting time and…
ZH: Will you be there kind of getting the atmosphere in the streets or going to the Opening Ceremony or anything like that?
JL: Well, I'm not sure I'm allowed to say but…
JT: You can
JL: We’re here now…
ZH: Say it!
JL: I'm part of the Opening Ceremony and they've said - I'm introducing some countries - but they've said you've got 30 seconds where you can… they sort of said "say what you like" before you introduce the countries and they want me to submit my sort of script of what I'm going to say...but you know... with live... the minute you go live, there's a little thing in your head that just says 'say something awful'.
Presenters [laugh]
JT: You haven't got that now, have you?!
All: [laugh]
JL: Now you've said it! But I'm, you know, so I don't know what I'm going to say really!
JT: Can you tell us what countries your introducing, maybe we can help?
JL: I'm introducing the countries of Asia...I'm panicking because I feel like there'll be quite a lot of viewers for it around the world.
JT: The eyes of the world will be on Birmingham but that’s kind of the point. The spotlight is on Birmingham.
