Comedian Joe Lycett has caused a kerfuffle with his appearance on the first edition of new political show Sunday With Laura Kuenssberg.
Lycett was appearing as a pundit alongside Labour politcian Emily Thornberry and former Boris Johnson aide Cleo Watson.
After Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak were interviewed by Kuenssberg Lycett threw the cat among the pigeons with his comments, saying sarcastically that he was “incredibly right-wing” and that despite what viewers had just seen to the contrary potential next PM Truss had revealed how she was going to solve the cost of living crisis. He added: “You said earlier I’m not left or right. I know there's been criticism in the Mail on Sunday today about lefty liberal wokey comedians on the BBC. I’m actually very right-wing and I loved it. I thought she was very clear, she gave great clear answers. I know exactly what she's up to.” He was apparently heard offscreen shouting “You smashed it, Liz!”.
Kuenssberg tried to get him to be straight with her but Lycett doubled down in his mockery of Truss while keeping a straight face: "She was very clear what she said. I think you know exactly what's going to happen. Your reasssured. I’m reassured.”
The Birmingham comic continued to send up Truss: "As Liz said there it would be wrong to predict the future, even though loads of people have predicted we're going to have real issues with paying energy bills. I think she’s right to say, basically, let’s not predict, let’s just see what happens next week. I think she did the right thing there.”
After Rishi Sunak was interviewed Lycett said that as he was not going to be PM they "might as well have interviewed Peter Andre"
