If TV hasn't already eaten itself it has now. Jon Richardson: Take My Mother-in-Law wasn't just a slight twist on the comic-pairs-with-parent format as done by Jack Whitehall, Romesh Ranganathan and Russell Howard. It also borrowed freely from the heightened reality format of Dave's Meet The Richardsons in which we watched Jon and wife Lucy Beaumont as they went about their daily lives with hilarious consequences.
This time round it was Gill Adams, Lucy's mum hitting the road with Jon with hilarious consequences. There was a brief back story about Jon hoping Gill would move to Spain rather than move in with them and then before you could say "Cost Del Sol" they were off to the Spanish coast.
You could not get a more different couple. Jon is a misanthropic miser (in the programme, at least), while fun-loving, sangria-loving Gill is what you might call larger than life. She wants to meet everyone, Jon wants to sit on his own as much as possible and wherever possible avoid conversation with strangers (though judging by a blind date set up for his mum that he sits in on he does speak fairly decent A level Spanish).
So can they hit it off or will this be a road trip from hell? Actually they do seem to get on, though Jon draws the line at sharing a bed with Lucy's mum when they stay on a caravan site that looks more life a refugee camp for disgruntled brexiteers than a paradise in the sun. Jon does crack a smile though when he discovers that the beer is only 15 cents a can...
It's a pretty corny format, complete with them indulging in some terrible karaoke, but Adams is definitely a character and we already know how funny cardigan-clad curmudgeon Jon can be. I have to say I felt a little bit grubby enjoying this but, heck, 15 cents a can of lager, I might ask Jon for the address myself.
