Joe Lycett's fans are divided over his plan to shred £10k if David Beckham does not quit his Qatar deal. Lycett issued the challenge to David Beckham last week. Beckham is set to earn millions of pounds from his position as an ambassador for the Qatar World Cup. Qatar has come in for criticism for it's position on LGBTQ+ rights and its 'morality' laws.
Lycett has said that if David Beckham does end his relationship he "will donate 10 grand of my own money to charities that support queer people in football."
But the plan to shred money has attracted both good and bad publicity on social media.
Emalie Walsh tweeted: "The majority of comments on this post are about Joe shredding £10k, why is there not the same level of outrage for Qatar and their treatment of human beings or Beckham being bought off to help improve their image? If he wants to spend his money highlighting this, that’s his right"
'Bob' suggested: "Shred it, put it all into a clear plastic box and display it at an art show with a plaque : "Beckhams Reputation", donate ticket sales to good charities, easily clear more than 10k with people wanting to see the 10k bits xx"
Alyssa Taylor thought this was a good solution: "Yes, this is the perfect solution to Joe having to (still hoping he won't have to) shred all that money. Completely support this but I also see what people are saying about donating it but I'm definitely more of the side of shredding it. Still hoping Beckham gets in touch though."
Robert Payne echoed a number of posts on Twitter that felt Lycett should not shred money when so many people are struggling financially: "Please don't. People really need money. Give it to a charity or find a person who needs it. Pay off someone's credit card debt or something."
Elba said: "I'm begging you not to do it Joe, not while so many people are in need. I support the reason but not the action."
Andrew Trunkfield wrote: "I’ve cancelled my monthly UNICEF donation. They’d benefit far more from Beckham donating his £10m fee to UNICEF. If he does that, they can have my money again, otherwise they need to sack him and find a better advocate."
Joe Lycett is set to shred or save at noon UK time, on Sunday, November 20, the day that the World Cup 2022 starts.
