Would I Lie To You? New Series 2023

Would I Lie To You? is one of those panel shows that feels like it has been around for ever. In fact it has only been around since 2007, with the sixteenth series starting this week following an Xmas special. Those with long memories might recall that it was originally hosted by Angus Deayton until Rob Brydon took over. David Mitchell and Lee Mack, however, have been ever-present, except for one episode when Lee was busy elsewhere and Greg Davies stood in for him.

The first episode of the new series of Wilty features guests Steve Pemberton from inside No 9, stand-up comedian Shazia Mirza, Bez from Happy Mondays and all-round TV regular and Motsi Mabuse, who has also become a familiar screen face in recent years.

Steve Pemberton ought to be particularly good at pulling the wool over the opposition's eyes. As well as being an actor who should be capable of hiding the truth he is also great with words – he's a crossword obsessive – and as anyone who has ever caught Inside No 9 will know, he has a vivid imagination.

Bez has also got a pretty vivid imagination though, while as a stand-up Mirza is certainly used to telling a convincing story and winning people over.

The transmission dates of future episodes have not been officially confirmed but the line-ups have and among them it is particularly delightful to see that Bob Mortimer will be returning to the show. Mortimer's stories are so legendary they've been collected on YouTube and make a great programme all put together in one place.

It is not definitive but it looks like Mortimer will be a guest on the penultimate episode some time in late February so keep an eye out for that.

Future guests also include Lucy Beaumont, Jayde Adams, Munya Chawawa, Tom Allen and Chris McCausland who was so good alongside Lee Mack at the Bafta Awards earlier this year.

Would I Lie To You?, BBC One, 8pm, Fridays from January 6.
