Rarely Asked Questions: Rhiannon Shaw, Vault Festival

What do your parents think of your job?

My mum would prefer I gave it up, but she provides me with too much comedy gold for me to ever stop. It's that funny Scottish accent she has. Stop being so funny, mum.

What’s the worst thing about being a comedian?

Late nights and travelling. I am a sleepy person. Also, middle-aged men who sit in the front row with their arms crossed because they know for a fact that women aren’t funny.

I think you are very good at what you do (at least I hope you are, that’s why I’m asking these questions). What do you think of you?

I think I’m okay! Getting better year on year, under the tutelage of better comics. Find out for yourself at my show, Wedding Night.

How much do you earn and how much would you like to earn?

Above minimum wage. I’d like to earn maximum wage (before tax).

How important is luck in terms of career success – have you had lucky breaks?

I’m trying to give myself more credit for my successes and not say that everything good that’s ever happened in my career has been because of luck. That being said, yeah, it’s mostly luck and knowing nice people who will work with you again.

Alan Davies has said that comedians fall into two categories - golfers and self-harmers. The former just get on with life, the latter are tortured artists. Which are you – or do you think you fit into third category?

I’m a self-harmer kept in check by my friends and family, who have normal jobs and know getting all ‘tortured artist’ over dick jokes is fundamentally stupid. Someday I’ll go full golfer, I hope, but while I’m still a 20-something woman working in the arts I’m going to keep pretending that poking fun at myself is both really difficult and really profound.

Who is your favourite person ever and why – not including family or friends or other comedians?

Taylor Swift, because I’ve been a fan since I was 12 and her album evermore is a lyrical masterpiece.

Do you keep your drawers tidy and if not why not? (please think long and hard about this question, it's to settle an argument with my girlfriend. The future of our relationship could depend on your response).

No. A drawer should be as cluttered as possible, so you can slide it out of sight and feel good about doing so. It should only be neat on the outside, otherwise what’s the point? You might as well not bother hiding those things in a drawer.
