Rarely Asked Questions: Natasha Anderson, Vault Festival

What do your parents think of your job?

You know what, they are super proud of what I do. Which means a lot because my parents are from up North and the Caribbean, so I really needed to find a “real” job. But for them to stop asking me if I have a pension and be my biggest cheerleaders is special. I knew I was on to something good with comedy when they both referred to it as my ‘career’!

What’s the worst thing about being a comedian?

Oh eating at ridiculous times. It’s either early bird specials or midnight feasts. And there’s so many gaps for snacks! You have to have a certain level of self control to snack on fruit when you’re on your fourth gig of the week and you’ve not eaten since lunch. It’s a level of self control that I rarely reach.

I think you are very good at what you do (at least I hope you are, that’s why I’m asking these questions). What do you think of you?

Thanks! I also think I’m very good. I honestly wouldn’t walk on stage every night if I thought I wasn’t at least very good and could make people laugh and feel like they had seen something special. The first sign of me being bad and I’m going to probably….continue doing comedy…

How much do you earn and how much would you like to earn?

I want to earn enough to buy a house (in London) and go on a couple of decent holidays each year. That’s my criteria. I’ve not bought the house yet so… Oh and to buy designer handbags without questioning it. That’s the real aim. Maybe I need to give up comedy and just marry someone rich?

How important is luck in terms of career success – have you had lucky breaks?

There is definitely an element of being in the right place at the right time, or catching someone on a good day. That’s just life. but you also have to be bloody good at what you do, which is a combination of talent and hard work. My thought process is if I really work at being great, then the ‘luck’ will come with it.

Alan Davies has said that comedians fall into two categories - golfers and self-harmers. The former just get on with life, the latter are tortured artists. Which are you – or do you think you fit into third category?

Oh I’m the former. I’ve done too much therapy and CBD oil to be the latter. I’ve had my tortured artist era. I’m now in my hot girl extended summer/‘what’s the worst that could happen?’ era!

Who is your favourite person ever and why – not including family or friends or other comedians?

Beyoncé. Because she is Beyoncé.

Do you keep your drawers tidy and if not why not? (please think long and hard about this question, it's to settle an argument with my girlfriend. The future of our relationship could depend on your response).

Haha! Yes I actually do! I did Marie Kondo’s Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up years ago and it revolutionised the way I live! This is probably why I no longer need therapy or CBD Oil…
