Petition Launched After Bernard Cribbins' Absence From Baftas In Memoriam Section

There has been outrage on social media over the omission of Bernard Cribbins during the Bafta Awards section when tributes were paid to industry people who had died during the year.

Sally Thomsett, who starred with Cribbins in the classic film The Railway Children tweeted: "H Darlings, have watched The BAFTA's on TV & I'm absolutely appalled that the fabulous Bernard Cribbins, who died on July 27 last year aged 93, was not mentioned in stars that we've lost within the last year, they should be disgusted with themselves, words fail me XxXxX"

There is now a petition to get the matter rectified which you can sign here.

Some people suggested that maybe Bafta will honour Cribbins during its TV Awards later this year, but others pointed out that Cribbins had an illustrious film career. Simon Harri tweeted: "How the hell did BAFTA NOT mention Bernard Cribbins in the ‘people we’ve lost in the last 12 months’ montage? His work touched every generation of viewer alive today from Carry On movies to Fawlty Towers to The Wombles to Doctor Who to Old Jack’s Boat on CBeebies. Disgraceful."

To paraphrase an old Bernard Cribbins song they seemed to be digging a hole for themselves with this response. Tom E replied: "You literally interviewed Geri Halliwell... don't tell me there wasn't enough time for Bernard Cribbins"

Bafta did tweet the follow to a complaint from Victoria Powell: "With limited time in our broadcast it isn’t possible to honour all those who have sadly passed away. Bernard features in our online records at bafta.org/heritage/in-me and given his influential work in TV, he will be considered for inclusion in the next Television Awards broadcast"

He listed the films on Cribbins' Wikipedia page and added: "For the benefit of my US followers, missing Bernard Cribbins out of a UK movie awards ‘in memorium’ segment is like overlooking Arnold Schwarzenegger for an ‘Austrian men with huge muscles who have played murderous cyborgs before becoming Governor of California’ hall of fame."
