John Cleese has tweeted an apology following the umpteen articles and social media posts after the news broke that Fawlty Towers was coming back to our screens and would co-star his daughter Camilla.
Cleese tweeted the following which we are guessing is intended to be somewhat comical: "I must apologise I had no idea that the idea of writing a new sitcom with my daughter would cause so much anger and distress I truly meant no harm. Naively I thought it might be fun But I feel terrible about having released this tide of negative emotion Please forgive me"
His fans were understandably sympathetic. JCJim tweeted: "You did nothing wrong, you have been creating and people have been enjoying your craft for years. Thanks for making us laugh and enjoy your entertainment."
Dana tweeted: "Please don't apologize. Without Manuel, Polly and Sybil, the show is an homage to one of the finest sitcoms ever made. You're a legend. Ignore the trolls."
Allowed An Opinion tweeted: "Don’t listen to these negative “progressives’ aka nutters. Just concentrate on delivering a new series to rival the previous series. Good luck!"
Wayne Marriott tweeted: "Never apologise for comedy, if they can't take a joke that's their problem not yours"
Stuart Porter added: "You have no need to apologise it is not your fault people have their heads so far up their back sides they do not know what true comedy is."
While WWW lent his support and wondered why Cleese had not had a knighthood: "John - how is it NOT Sir John by the way? - we live in strange times where even comedy can be politicised & weaponised. You’ve brought more joy to the world than the critics & whiners could ever conceive, let alone achieve."
