Adam Kay, Lou Sanders, Robert Newman And More For Margate Literary Festival

Lou Sanders, Adam Kay, Andi Osho, Rosie Wilby, Sam Baker and Robert Newman are among the names set to appear at a literary festival taking place in Margate.

Margate Bookie takes place 19-22 October featuring the comedy talents of Sanders, Osho, Newman, Wilby, Baker and Kay - alongside stellar literary stars including Deborah Levy, A.C. Grayling, Sathnam Sangera, Yomi Adegoke, Ian Dunt, Miki Berenyi, Grace Dent and Tessa Hadley.

Now in its eighth year and hosted by new venue partner Dreamland, Turner Contemporary and venues around Margate, visitors and Kent locals can dive into a packed programme of comedy, poetry, music, art, politics and fiction and an extensive FREE fun-packed children’s programme. So take a trip to the seaside and visit Margate, the coolest town in the UK (according to Time Out and Wall Street Journal) this October for the perfect weekend break of comedy and culture.

Highlights include:

·       Margate resident, award winning journalist and author Daisy Buchanan hosts actor, writer, comedian and film maker Andi Osho (Asking for a Friend, Tough Crowd) and top comedian Lou Sanders (champion of series eight of Taskmaster, C4 and author of What’s That Lady Doing) for a live recording of the much loved You’re Booked podcast.

·       Rob Newman’s epic stand-up show Life Sized Nation arrives in Dreamland’s ballroom for his always original take on the world, from cave paintings to car-free cities, by way of Imperial Rome's chariot ban, Rapper’s Remorse, rewilding and the Geological Time Periods Song, and the dance steps of Homo Ergaster.

·       Battered and bruised from his time on the NHS frontline, Adam Kay looks back, moves forwards and opens up some old wounds with fellow doctor Roopa Farooki as they put the world to rights and relish some really disgusting stories from his latest Number One Sunday Times bestseller, Undoctored.

·       Described by Scott Mills as ‘the greatest performer on the planet’ Margate local Harry Baker brings his Edinburgh sellout show home. He is Unashamed about rediscovering what makes you come alive, via falafel-based Chris Evans diss tracks, online toilet seat reviews, and a cracking poem about wellies.

Festival founder and director Andreas Loizou said: ‘With new partnerships including the iconic Dreamland, and an expanded programme featuring the best in comedy and literature, music and poetry the Bookie 2023 is bigger and better than ever.’

The Margate Bookie is a registered charity that was set up by Andreas Loizou. Director and founder Loizou says ‘We’ve grown from a single afternoon in a disused warehouse to a four-day festival with 5000 visitors. We love how books bring people together, teach them new things, turn strangers into friends and fire our imaginations. I'm overjoyed that Bookie has put Margate on the UK's literary map. and brought people together to celebrate words and books in the seaside town we love.’

The Bookie is supported by local booksellers Moon Lane Books, Book Bodega and Seadog Books from Ramsgate and Westgate’s Books That Expand The Mind.

Margate's iconic Dreamland will be a new host venue for this year's Bookie with events taking place across The Ballroom, the Roller Room and Cinque Ports.
