Nina Conti’s directorial debut feature film ‘Sunlight’ will have its world premiere at this year’s relaunched Edinburgh International Film Festival.
The premiere will take place on Saturday 17th August at The Cameo Cinema, 9.15pm, followed by further screenings across the festival (details below). Tickets for the premiere can be purchased here.
Set in New Mexico, the film is a darkly comedic, subversive and uniquely realised road trip film about a monkey, a misfit radio host and a dead man’s watch. A woman escaping a toxic relationship ends up on the road in a monkey suit with a man seeking retribution from his dead father.
Written, produced and directed by Fringe stalwart Conti, who also stars in the film as a life-size iteration of her stand-up sidekick, the film is fantastically absurd, original and funny. A natural, inventive extension of Conti’s sell-out comedy act.
The film co-stars and was co-written with Shenoah Allen, of the Pyjama Men comedy duo, and is executive produced by ‘This Is Spinal Tap’ creator Christopher Guest. The film is produced by Metro International. It recently featured as part of the BFI and British Council’s annual ‘Great 8’ showcase at this year’s Cannes.
The film’s soundtrack features music from Radiohead, Pixies and Aphex Twin.
Conti said: “I couldn’t be happier that the film’s world premiere will take place in the city that has most nurtured my comedy career from day one. I’m very excited to share it with audiences, it is my proudest work.”
The film’s premiere marks a bigger than usual Edinburgh for Nina, who will also be bringing her brand-new live show ‘Whose Face Is It Anyway?’ to the Pleasance Grand in the primetime evening slot of 7.30pm (31st July – 25th August, no performance on 7th, 13th, 19th).
The relaunched Edinburgh International Film Festival takes place from 15th - 21st August at venues across the city centre. ‘Sunlight’ is competing as part of The Sean Connery Prize for Feature Filmmaking Excellence alongside nine other feature-length World Premieres. The winner will be decided on by an audience vote and announced at the end of the festival.
