Viewers of BBC's Olympics coverage were convinced that comedian Johnny Vegas was commentating on the gymnastics on Tuesday evening.
Countless viewers of the BBC coverage were sure that it was the St Helens comedian/actor in the commentary box.
Sir Andronecus asked: "Since when did Johnny Vegas do commentary for the #OlympicGames"
Dale Gribble added: "Good to see BBC employing Johnny Vegas after his work on Benidorm and the PG Tips Ads dried up"
James Lee wrote on X, formerly Twitter: "Sounded like Matt Baker and Johnny Vegas on the commentary. Weird pairing but experts is experts I guess."
Martinus joked: "Johnny Vegas' s gymnastic commentaryis fabulous. Not a sausage roll in sight."
Danerous Dave asked: "Is it me or is Johnny Vegas commentating on the Olympic gymnastics for the BBC?"
Katie Rose was confused: "How is Johnny Vegas commentating the gymnastics final?"
@AntonyThrower86 posted on X: "Thought for a minute Johnny Vegas was commentating on the women's gymnastics final"
@sendvictorious added: "I tried not to think of Johnny Vegas doing the co-commentary on the gymnastics but alas I have failed."
@dolphindiver added: "I'm loving the Olympic gymnastics but is it just me that thinks one of the commentators sounds like Johnny Vegas? I love the image in my head that Johnny is there talking us through all the technicalities of the beam routine..."
Chris Monk was brief and to the point: "BBC's gymnastics co-commentator sounds like Johnny Vegas"
It turned out that it was actually Craig Heap, who is from Burnley in Lancashire, who has represented England over 100 times, and Team GB at the 2000 Summer Olympics.
Mick P pointed out the difference: "He doesn’t sound like him at all. Johnny Vegas is from St Helen’s. Craig Heap is from Burnley. Perhaps because I’m from the North West of England myself the difference is more obvious."
