What do your parents think of your job?
My mum is very supportive and my dad is dead so he rarely lets me know what he thinks.
What’s the worst thing about being a comedian?
Sometimes it does feel like a sickness to try and flip everything into a joke to deal with absolutely anything in one’s life. It's this weird way of thinking that makes it difficult to really move through genuine emotions.
I think you are very good at what you do (that’s why I’m asking these questions). What do you think of you?
10/10. I struggled a lot with self esteem growing up and through adulthood. Feeling like an imposter while also feeling like I worked really hard to get here. I try to practice more positive self-talk now even if I don’t totally believe my own hype; it helps to try to speak it into existence!
How much do you earn and how much would you like to earn?
Woah a lady never discloses how much they earn, it's how people get away with paying us less! I would like to earn enough to pay off my debt and go on vacation without checking my bank balance.
How important is luck in terms of career success – have you had lucky breaks?
Luck is huge but it isn’t everything. I think people attribute a lot of success on “luck” and consider success and luck in these measurable terms but luck can look like having supportive friends, being healthy, working hard and having someone notice! Some of my closest friends helped me grow my following on social media through producing a talk show we co-created and I host called Pretty Gay. I’m very lucky to have producers and friends who will take a risk on something like that.
Alan Davies has said that comedians fall into two categories - golfers and self-harmers. The former just get on with life, the latter are tortured artists. Which are you – or do you think you fit into third category?
Oh gosh I hope we can do away with the tortured artist - it's so wonderful to get to do what I do… that being said I would describe myself as a tragic optimist.
Who is your favourite person ever and why – not including family or friends or other comedians?
Sonja Morgan from the Real Housewives of New York. She is unapologetically herself on that show and tours the country as a cabaret artist. I love that she puts it all out there.
Do you keep your drawers tidy and if not why not? (please think long and hard about this question, it's to settle an argument with my girlfriend. The future of our relationship could depend on your response)?
Tidy is a state of mind. My tidy is certainly not your tidy. My drawers make sense to me, but honestly I am a comedian who would rather organise a set list than a stack of linens.
