What do your parents think of your job?
I'm really lucky because my parents have always encouraged me to keep going. They never once told me to take a different route or suggested that I get into another career that might be more reliable or lucrative. Sure, they've suggested survival jobs here and there but they've always told me how proud they are of me and have always been really supportive about me performing. They really believe in me and that means a lot to me.
What’s the worst thing about being a comedian?
The worst thing is having to constantly talk about yourself and your shows. The self promo always feels a bit cringey even if you're proud of your work. Sometimes it feels a bit overkill but it's part of the job. Another thing that can be tough is people expecting you to be hilarious all of the time. Like, yes, I'm hilarious but I also cry a lot.
I think you are very good at what you do (that’s why I’m asking these questions). What do you think of you?
I think I'm a real baddie. I didn't always think that, though! It's taken me a long time to feel confident in my work and this current version of myself. I'm really proud of myself and my work and how far I've come both professionally and personally. It doesn't mean I don't get insecure - but overall, I think I'm pretty badass.
How much do you earn and how much would you like to earn?
$1.7 billion USD per minute. I'd like to earn $1.7 billion USD per second.
How important is luck in terms of career success – have you had lucky breaks?
Not to be cliche, but I really do think luck is when hard work meets opportunity. That's been the case for me at least. I definitely put in hard work and preparation and I think that positions me to recognize and capitalize on opportunities when I see them. I also have a supportive network of family, friends, and mentors and that definitely keeps me motivated during highs and lows of this career. So I would say that's where I'm most lucky!
Alan Davies has said that comedians fall into two categories - golfers and self-harmers. The former just get on with life, the latter are tortured artists. Which are you – or do you think you fit into third category?
Hmm, we have good days and bad days. I'm a golfer who sometimes self-harms? It's difficult for me to recognize or enjoy my success. I tend to stress over the smallest details, and I find it hard to be complacent, so perhaps I'm a self harmer who sometimes golfs?
Who is your favourite person ever and why – not including family or friends or other comedians?
Pippi Longstocking! She was such a wild little badass who did whatever the hell she wanted. She was all about freedom and nonconformity. She's unapologetically herself, rejects societal norms and follows her instincts. She is me and I am her.
Do you keep your drawers tidy and if not why not? (please think long and hard about this question, it's to settle an argument with my girlfriend. The future of our relationship could depend on your response).
Wow. This is a lot of pressure. I can only hope that I give you the right response. Are we talking about underwear or dresser drawers (this is me avoiding the question)? The answer is NO. I am a dirty, dirty, girl.
