Edinburgh Fringe 2024: Rarely Asked Questions – Natasha Pearl Hansen

What do your parents/children (delete as applicable) think of your job?

  • My parents are the biggest lovers and supporters of what I do. They've come to countless shows over the years, they helped me decorate for my first comedy special taping, and my mom is actually coming to visit me at EdFringe with my aunt (she's never been to the UK)! My parents are both hilarious in very different ways, with very different senses of humor and personalities, and I think I got lucky to grab queues from them both in my sense of humor growing up.

What’s the worst thing about being a comedian?

  • Everything that's awesome about being a comedian is also the worst thing at some point! The pay, the bookings, the yes's and no's. It's constant ups and downs regardless of how far along in your career you are. I once performed comedy in the back of a strip club between dancers and got paid in a bucket of chicken wings, and slept in someone's bathtub. On the flip side, I've also performed a private show at a mansion in the Caribbean for wealthy people and been flown to headline a festival by NBC/Universal in a private helicopter. Sometimes you're way down, sometimes you're way up. It's a wild ride.

I think you are very good at what you do (that’s why I’m asking these questions). What do you think of you?

  • Here's what I think of myself - I work my ass off, I am always creating and innovating, and I'm willing to mess up and learn from it. Artists never think they're putting out the best thing, rather they take risks by putting art out anyways to commemorate a moment in time or a place they are in their life or career. I feel like I create art from this place. I love to have fun while telling my story in my unique way. And I absolutely crush most shows I do these days, so I'm very happy with myself and even more happy with where I'll be over the next five to ten years.

How much do you earn and how much would you like to earn?

  • I actually do pretty well for myself now. I'm in the six figures range, but that also comes from my ability to engage brand partnerships and deals the way I do. I'm a business woman and have two companies and a startup, so I'm always getting creative on how to generate more income as a creative entrepreneur. I believe money is an unlimited resource, so I'd like to not limit my future earnings to a dollar amount. But I know I'll be worth a LOT one day. ...also, someone buy one of my TV shows, k thanks!

How important is luck in terms of career success – have you had lucky breaks?

  • Luck is absolutely important, but you have to be prepared when it strikes. I've had quite a few lucky breaks! I've almost sold a few shows, and was on a talent holding deal with two major networks at one point. I got my first standup TV taping only about three years into my career. But I also haven't hit my big big break yet, and I'm excited for when that happens because I've been preparing since 2006. I'll be ready!

Alan Davies has said that comedians fall into two categories - golfers and self-harmers. The former just get on with life, the latter are tortured artists. Which are you – or do you think you fit into third category?

  • Oh I'm for sure a golfer. I move on and keep creating. I've done a lot of work on my mental health and well being over the years, and I absolutely do have hard days, but they affect me for like an hour and then I'm onto the next thing. It's been real work to get to that space, but I've always naturally been a "find the silver linings" type person and I'm thankful for that.

Who is your favourite person ever and why – not including family or friends or other comedians?

  • Oooh that's hard. I collect people in my life and have so many that I'd consider a favorite. I think I'd have to say though that my favorite is Carly. We've been friends since childhood, she's one of the most unique people I've ever met, has the coolest personality, and we just get each other. It's one of those inexplicable relationships. I was also texting with her yesterday so she's top of mind! All my girlfriends really, and they know who they are. I have the most awesome friends.

Do you keep your drawers tidy and if not why not? (please think long and hard about this question, it's to settle an argument with my girlfriend. The future of our relationship could depend on your response).

  • Hahaha my closet is a total disaster, but it is color coordinated and organized by clothing style so I'll give myself that! The one thing I hoard is clothing. I love fashion... and shoes. I don't know any women with a tidy closet, and I stand by that.
