Edinburgh Fringe 2024: Rarely Asked Questions – Njambi McGrath

What do your parents/children (delete as applicable) think of your job?

My kids think my job is cool. The weird thing is they have learnt my set and do it on each other which I find hilarious. I never thought I would be their entertainment.

What’s the worst thing about being a comedian?

Being a comedian is a great job ruined by travel especially driving home at 2 am and eating motorway sandwiches. I want to earn so much money so that I can employ someone to drive me to and from gigs.

I think you are very good at what you do (that’s why I’m asking these questions). What do you think of you?

I have never thought I am good enough, I guess if I did I would stop writing, doing the fringe and stop even trying. Getting better is what drives me. Even when people are laughing I’m not still convinced and constantly think I need to improve.

How much do you earn and how much would you like to earn?

Not enough and I would love to earn enough so as not to worry about earning enough.

How important is luck in terms of career success – have you had lucky breaks?

You could be the most brilliant comedian and never be discovered or appreciated for what you do. Luck is the right person seeing you at the right time and you fitting into the genre of what they are after. I guess I’ve been lucky to have been given the opportunities I have. Luck is also one element because you’ve got to be able to produce the substance.

Alan Davies has said that comedians fall into two categories - golfers and self-harmers. The former just get on with life, the latter are tortured artists. Which are you – or do you think you fit into third category?

I am neither and I hover between different things. I always seek to channel through different avenues and distract myself from negativity. It’s nonetheless undeniable that people who work in the arts are riddled with frustrations.

Who is your favourite person ever and why – not including family or friends or other comedians?

They’ve not been born lol. I know that sounds weird.

Do you keep your drawers tidy and if not why not? (please think long and hard about this question, it's to settle an argument with my girlfriend. The future of our relationship could depend on your response).

No. Nobody ever looks inside my drawers so any efforts would be a waste of my energy. The most important thing is that I can find a fresh pair every day.
