Edinburgh Fringe Society Comments On Oasis Gigs
The Edinburgh Fringe Society has commented on the prospect of Oasis gigs having a damaging effect on next year's Edinburgh Fringe.
The Fringe is due to take place from August 1 - 25 next year. Oasis initially announced two reunion gigs at Murrayfield Stadium on August 8 & 9, which look set to cause a huge influx of fans coming to the city. There have already been reports of hotels and airbnbs massively increasingly their price to capitalise on the demand as has happened in the past with Taylor Swift shows.
Reports say hotel accommodation for the first two nights of the shows is already over £1000. There have been some reports of accommodation providers cancelling existing bookings made before the gig announcement so that they can put their prices up for new guests.
The situation has now been made even worse by an additional Murrayfield date being added on August 12 due to demand. This will put increased pressure on both visiting performers and Fringe fans who may be pushed away from the summer arts event by the surge in prices.
An Edinburgh Festival Fringe Society Spokesperson has issued the following statement: "Accommodation affordability and availability in August was already challenging. Our focus will continue to be on supporting artists and we encourage anyone needing help or advice to contact our Artist Services team for assistance in the coming months. The timing of other events in August in Edinburgh is outwith our control. Our ask is that those coming to Edinburgh next year for Oasis, will support the 2025 Fringe and the artists who take the risk to be part of it, by seeing shows while they are visiting."
Before the statement was given to Beyond The Joke comedian Stewart Lee expressed concerns for the developing situation in his column in the
Observer. He wrote: "The Oasis reunion already has one unintended consequence...Edinburgh fringe whole month’s accommodation budget would go in a night, so by my reckoning the first two weeks of the festival just got totally fucked, Oasis singlehandedly murdering what 14 years of the Tories’ war on the arts couldn’t quite kill off. Sorted!"
Never mind Oasis v Blur. This has turned into Oasis v Fringe.
