Am I the only person who watches Richard Osman's House of Games cheering a particular player on to win as well as shouting out the answers. Last week I definitely wanted Sam Campbell to triumph and I thought he'd done it after a slow start by winning the final two days but somehow the convoluted (to me anyway) scoring system meant that he was pipped at the post.
So this week I'll be cheering on Emma Sidi and hoping that I haven't jinxed her. This is good timing for Sidi's career profile. She can currently also be seen on Taskmaster and is also on tour with her latest show, Emma Sidi is Sue Gray. The dates and details are here.
It's going to be an interesting tour for Sidi as when she came up with the show Sue Gray was riding high at the Labour Party's Chief of Staff. But recently Gray has stepped down, so the show might need a spot of rewriting.
Then again it is hardly biographical. Sidi portrays Gray as if she is a barmaid in EastEnders or a member of The Only Way Is Essex cast. We don't know much about Gray but I doubt if this is really how she speaks. It is more of an absurdist impression that a Rory Bremner-type take-off. Jan Ravens and the Dead Ringers team need not fear for their jobs.
Sidi is certainly smart enough to win House of Games. She was a member of Cambridge Footlights before appearing in TV shows such as Starstruck alongside her former flatmate Rose Matafeo. In this wee's compeition she is up against Kelle Bryan, Antony Costa and another comedian, albeit of a different vintage, Alexei Sayle.
Sayle was a pioneer of alternative comedy in the late seventies and made his name as the very first compere at the Comedy Store, where Rik Mayall, Ade Admondson, Nigel Planer and Peter Richardson – and later French and Saunders – all cut their performing teeth.
