More Details About The Spinal Tap Sequel

More details have emerged about the forthcoming eagerly anticipated sequel to classic mockumentary Spinal Tap. The film reunites the original main cast, Christopher Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer, with original director Rob Reiner, who also plays fictional filmmaker Marty Di Bergi.

New cast members include Brits Nina Conti, Chris Addison and Kerry Godliman. In a new wideranging podcast interview with Adam Buxton to promote her new TV series Whitstable Pearl, Godliman talked about working on Spinal Tap 2.

Filming wrapped in New Orleans over the summer and the film should be out in 2025.

Godliman plays Hope, the daughter of the band's original manager Ian Faith (Tony Hendra, who died in 2021).

"The premise is that they're all out of touch. They haven't seen each other for a long time. And then Garth Brooks does a cover of a Tap number and it goes viral. And I've inherited the contract and I realise that they have to play a gig because one of their songs has gone mega. And so I bring them back together and then they have a gig."

Godliman had previously worked with Christopher Guest, who plays guitarist Nigel Tufnel, on the 2016 movie Mascots. Out of the blue she got the Tap call: "I got this text one evening from my voiceover agent saying, look at your emails with a head exploding emoji. And there was an email from Rob Reiner's assistant saying, Rob's trying to get hold of Kerry to potentially play this character. I thought it was a windupAnd then two days later I was on a Zoom with Rob Reiner. I think Christopher must have suggested me to him. He's always said I sound like David St Hubbins."

Godliman, who describes it has her "dream job" didn't have a scene with Paul McCartney but said that on the day he was shooting everyone involved in the film, including her, suddenly found a reason to be on the set just to see him.

She did have a scene with Elton John and David Furnish, which was improvised. Initially she wondered how it would go, but it went so well they ended up filming for a long time, so it will be interesting to see what makes the cut. She says that David Furnish was "hilarious".
