The recipients of the 63rd annual Rose d’Or Awards have been announced during a ceremony in London, celebrating excellence and innovation in international TV and audio programme-making. Channel 4’s long running Taskmaster won the award for Best Comedy Entertainment, with co-presenters Alex Horne and Greg Davies (pictured) among those there to accept it.
Hosted by comedian/writer Sophie Duker, the awards highlighted achievements across 13 categories, including Performance of the Year, Emerging Talent, and the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award.
The Performance of the Year Award, recognising an outstanding performance in a series or programme in the past year, was awarded to Gary Oldman for his gripping portrayal of Jackson Lamb in Apple TV+’s Slow Horses.
Accepting the award, Oldman remarked, "Playing Jackson Lamb has been so enjoyable - that to be recognised for this role is absolutely amazing”
The Emerging Talent Award, celebrating a breakthrough contribution in a programme or series, went to Ambika Mod for her unforgettable performance as Emma in One Day.
Mod said: "Thank you for thinking of me and my work - it's such a privilege to work in this industry as an actor, let alone be recognised in ways such as this!"
Italian entertainer Rosario Fiorello was celebrated with the Lifetime Achievement Award. With a career spanning decades, Fiorello has left an incredible mark on Italian television.
On accepting his award, Fiorello said: "Receiving the Rose d'Or is like a dream come true for me. It’s an award I want to share with everyone who has accompanied me on this journey and together with the audience who has always supported my craziness."
Netflix’s series Baby Reindeer won the Best Drama. The Clerkenwell Films series, created by Richard Gadd and telling the story of his battle with a serial stalker, beat off incredibly strong competition in the category including ITV’s series Mr Bates vs The Post Office, which spurred government action to clear and compensate victims of the UK’s sub-postmaster scandal.
ITV did find success in the News and Current Affairs category with Ukraine’s War: The Other Side - the challenging perspective of the conflict from the point of view of Russian soldiers.
Sky Documentaries triumphed in the Documentary category with the unique “Otto Baxter: Not A F**ing Horror Story which follows a film-maker with Down’s syndrome as he makes an autobiographical horror film.
Other big-name winners included Netflix’s Squid Game: The Challenge in Competition Reality and the BBC’s reboot of classic format Gladiators in Studio Entertainment.
Belgium stood out this year, taking three of the prizes on offer – Best Audio, Best Soap and Best Factual Entertainment.
Norway secured something of a coup, taking the Best Comedy Drama prize for NRK’s Dates in Real Life ahead of other heavy hitters like Netflix series Kaos and The Gentlemen.
The much loved Australian hit, Bluey picked up best in the Children and Youth category.
Mark Rowland, Chair of the Rose d’Or, said: “The Rose d’Or Awards 2024 saw over 700 entries from 30 countries. It gets more competitive every year – and came down to an incredibly strong group of finalists and to these worthy winners. Thank you to everyone who entered and to our judges, who had to make very tough choices.”
For Jean Philip De Tender, Director of Media and Deputy Director General at the European Broadcasting Union, the awards highlight the breadth, depth and diversity of talent and topics year after year.
“From gritty news and investigative pieces to entertainment that makes us laugh, cry and think, the Rose d’Or Awards bring out our best as an industry serving audiences in many essential ways,” De Tender said. “Huge thanks to everyone for your creativity and commitment. Please keep it coming.”
