Rosie Jones is to appear alongside Ed Larkin (The Little Big Things, West End; Tom Fletcher's The Creakers) in Birds of Paradise’s new accessible production, (We indulge in) a bit of roll play.
(We indulge in) a bit of roll play follows the experiences of Ben, played by Larkin, a young disabled man juggling parents, university and his sometimes girlfriend. Amidst this precarious balance, Ben is supported and guided by the ethereal character CripGod, played by Jones, who dips in and out as a playful narrator. Exposing the limitations and expectations that come with this life through a raucous lens, Ben's journey takes him and his secrets from the isolation of his bedroom to a world of unmediated desires. A world where he can stop asking for permission and start taking space.
Joining Jones and Larkin in this daring show will be Zoe Hunter (Jocasta, A Play, a Pie and a Pint; Dark Soul (a film for the ears), Celtic Media Festival, Torc Award for Excellence 2024), Alan Mackenzie (Hamlet, Bard in the Botanics; Sea Wall, Heroes Theatre; Looking for the One; Exquisite Corpse, A Play, a Pie and a Pint) and Royal Conservatoire of Scotland graduate Ava Duncan.
The brazen production will also feature acclaimed performance artists including multi- disciplinary artist and advocate Myla Corvidae (New Writers Award shortlist 2023); burlesque talent Eilidh Ellery (Unlocked Burlesque Gateway; The DisabiliTease Hybrid Festival 2024); renowned street performer Freak the Clown; award-winning interdisciplinary artist Roxy Nova (Best Cinematography, Vienna Porn Film Festival 2025); and queer, disabled actor and burlesque performer Indrid Heron.
Showcasing a fearless look at sex, disability and empowerment, (We indulge in) a bit of roll play starts as a sharp domestic comedy and evolves into a poignant and eye-opening theatrical piece which platforms authentic experiences.
Provoking crucial and open discussions around explicit storytelling and disabled narratives, this new show is written by Hana Pascal Keegan (Beyond Her Years, Almeida Theatre; Secret Garden, Open Air Regents Park; shortlisted for The Evening Standard’s Emerging Director Award 2021), Gabriella Sloss (GOOD SEX AFTER BAD SEX, Assembly Roxy; 787 Blinks, Traverse Theatre;
Jammed, EHFM) and Robert Softley Gale (writer, My Left Foot – The Musical; director, Don’t. Make. Tea.; The List 100 2024). Also working with renowned Intimacy Coordinator Vanessa Coffey (House of the Dragon, HBO; Outlander, Netflix/Sony; Vikings: Valhalla), this new work champions disabled lives and gives voice to the topics often avoided.
