Sean Hughes Leaves £4 Million Property To Shelter

Comedian Sean Hughes has left property worth in the region oif £4 million to the charity Shelter.

The acclaimed comedian, who died aged 51 in 2017 and was best known for his pioneering stand-up style and as a team captain on Never Mind The Buzzcock, left three houses to the charity that helps people in housing need. He did not marry or have any children and wanted the charity to receive the houses but because he had wills for both his private and business affairs it took a while to untangle. In the end the matter went to the High Court and was resolved by a judge.

The properties are believed to be his home in Crouch End and two other properties nearby.

It is thought to be the biggest donation by an individual ever made to Shelter. In 2003 Pink Floyd's David Gilmour sold his house for £3.6 million and donated the entire amount to Crisis.

As well as appearing on 91 episodes of Buzzcocks and starring in his own C4 sitcom Sean's Show, Hughes also wrote poetry, novels and presented a show on BBC 6 Music. He also acted in straight dramas and was briefly in Coronation Street.

Andy Harris, the charity’s director of income generation, said: “Sean Hughes was a passionate supporter of Shelter’s work, and we are enormously grateful for the generous gift left in his will. We have worked closely with Sean’s family to ensure his wishes are honoured.

“Gifts left in wills are a vital source of income for Shelter. This donation will enable us to continue to deliver expert support and advice to people impacted by the housing emergency and to campaign for everyone’s right to a safe and secure home.”
