Scottish comedian Gareth Mutch returns to the Edinburgh Fringe with ‘Gareth Mutch Means Well’. After being nominated for Best Show for his last two shows at the ISH awards Gareth returns with a show about good intentions, bad timing, and constantly putting his foot in it.
Expect class clashes, romantic disasters and the familiar feeling of trying to do the right thing - and rarely succeeding. Hilarious and painfully relatable; join this hotly tipped master of stand-up as he unashamedly revels in saying exactly the wrong thing at precisely the wrong moment.
Gareth has performed twice at Scotland’s T in the Park Festival, hosted regional heats of the BBC New Comedy Award and had the accolade of hosting last year's official launch party for the Edinburgh Fringe Society. He has supported Iain Stirling and Jason Manford as well as Tom Stade - who he has partnered with for the past four years on UK tours. This year, he joins the ‘England vs Scotland’ theatre tour – as the cream of the English and Scottish circuits go head to head in an epic duel to conquer audiences around the UK.
He has appeared on BBC Scotland’s ‘Comedy Underground’ STV’s ‘Edinburgh Festival’ show, ‘Live at Five’ and 'The Late Show’ and more recently for BBC Radio 4, 'The Good, The Bad and the Ugly'. He’s previously hosted two podcasts; ‘Too Mutch Information’ and ‘Two G’s in a Pod’ with fellow comedian Gareth Waugh. He guests regularly on the hugely popular 'Hot Water's Green Room' podcast and is one of the core team on the newly launched ‘Comic Quest Pod’ alongside fellow comedians taking a wild ride through Dungeons & Dragons.

What is the last thing you do before you go onstage
Pace, pint, perform. That’s my ritual.
What irritates you?
As a non driver this is rouge, but bad drivers.
What is the most dangerous thing you have ever done?
Danger? I stay well clear. It’s dangerous for Christ sake. I’m a very big scaredy cat, I rarely put myself in dangerous situations. I vape, I hear that’s pretty dangerous.
What is the most stupid thing you have ever done?
Stupid for a comedian is often rewarded, so I’ve done stupid things for laughs/attention from a very young age. The one that comes to mind immediately is when I waxed my eyebrows off at a high school charity leg waxing event - how did I look? Yeah pretty stupid.
What has surprised you the most during your career in comedy?
I think the uncertainty of it all. I think with most other lines of work, you can get good at something and coast. In comedy that doesn’t exist you can have the highest of highs one night and the next wondering if you’ve ever been funny. Oh and also, how much I love staying in hotels.
What do your parents think of your job?
I am so lucky, I could not have more supportive parents if anything they’ve been too supportive. From driving me to gigs at 17, paying to see my show every single year at the fringe (they insist). Yeah no funny answer here, they are just the best.
What’s the worst thing about being a comedian?
Travel; loneliness - next.
I think you are very good at what you do (that’s why I’m asking these questions). What do you think of you?
I think I’ve worked hard to be able to belong in a network of talent in this county. There are so many Scottish comedians who I think are brilliant. The fact my name is mentioned along side those brilliant acts is an honour, that’s what I think of me.
How much do you earn and how much would you like to earn?
Jesus, bit rude. None of your business and much more please.
How important is luck in terms of career success – have you had lucky breaks?
Massive!! Massively important. I think everyone at some point has got a lucky break. A lot of its right place right time. If I look back at some of the cool stuff I’ve done it’s because of right place, right time.
Alan Davies has said that comedians fall into two categories - golfers and self-harmers. The former just get on with life, the latter are tortured artists. Which are you – or do you think you fit into third category?
I’m a golfer who self harms.
Who is your favourite person ever and why – not including family or friends or other comedians?
Well I’m sorry, who else do I know? It would have to be David Tennant. Scottish, talented and funny. Reminds me of me!!
Do you keep your drawers tidy and if not why not? (please think long and hard about this question, it's to settle an argument with my girlfriend. The future of our relationship could depend on your response).
I do not keep them tidy and I know why I don’t, it’s not a priority. I have enough going on, I’m not waking up in the morning with that top of the list. Why would I waste time tidying drawers when I could be watching David Tennant in anything. Hope this helps you with your girlfriend.

The sort of person who enjoys self-deprecating comedy, storytelling, funny true stories and likes to laugh at the realities of real life.
