Interview: Rarely Asked Questions – Steve Bugeja: Page 2 of 2

Steve Bugeja
6. What do your parents think of your job?

My parents are very supportive. They are separated so they kind of compete with each other over how supportive they can be.  Both sets are coming to the fringe, Dad has offered to flyer for me for 2 hours a day, did you hear that mum?  What's your offer?  I'm listening.

7. What’s the worst thing about being a comedian?

 Public toilets.

8. I think you are very good at what you do (that’s why I’m asking
these questions). What do you think of you?

I think I'm a lazy, unfunny piece of crap.  I also think I'm too self critical.

9. How much do you earn and how much would you like to earn?

Loads.  Loads more.

Nah, money is not important, it's about the art.

10. How important is luck in terms of career success – have you had
lucky breaks?

I think it is genuinely crucial.  But, and I know it's a cliche, you do make your own luck.  The moments when I've had 'lucky breaks' have come after I've used my initiative or worked really hard at something.  But yes undoubtedly luck plays a huge part.

11. Alan Davies has said that comedians fall into two categories -
golfers and self-harmers. The former just get on with life, the latter
are tortured artists. Which are you – or do you think you fit into a
third category?

Erm.  I used to play golf as a child, but wasn't very good.  Not sure where that leaves me.  I don't think I'm a tortured artist, so I guess I do sort of get on with my life.  I kind of wish I was more tortured, that's funnier I think.

12. Who is your favourite person ever and why - not including family
or friends or other comedians?

Jose Mujica.  He is the former president of Uruguay.  You might have read about him.  He is known as the "humblest" President in the world.  While he was President he lived on a farm, gave 90% of his money to charity and rarely wore suits.  I became slightly obsessed with him for a bit, he seems like a top bloke.

 13. Do you keep your drawers tidy and if not why not?

Yes.  I have seven desk drawers, four of which are empty.  Can't get tidier than that.
