Interview: Rarely Asked Questions – Matthew Crosby of Pappy's: Page 2 of 2

6. What do your parents/children (delete as applicable) think of your job?

My mum and dad are very supportive. I think they're glad that I've got an outlet for this sort of dicking about. Stops me from behaving like a prick at family gatherings.

7. What’s the worst thing about being a comedian?

The anti-social hours. I constantly feel guilty that I don't get to see my wife enough.

8. I think you are very good at what you do (that’s why I’m asking these questions). What do you think of you?

That's a good question. I think I'm good at certain things and less good at others. So I'm trying to do more of the things I'm less good at to try and get better at them. I won't say what those things are. You'll just have to come and see the show and work out for yourself. Sorry audiences!

9. How much do you earn and how much would you like to earn?

I currently only earn a shit-load. I'd love to start earning a fuck-tonne.

10. How important is luck in terms of career success – have you had lucky breaks?

Both Pappy's and myself have been very lucky. But we have also always worked very hard. If luck comes along and you haven't put in the work then you probably won't spot it. Or it won't spot you.

11. Alan Davies has said that comedians fall into two categories - golfers and self-harmers. The former just get on with life, the latter are tortured artists. Which are you – or do you think you fit into a third category?

I think in my 20s I was a self-harmer. Very anxious, very grumpy, mood swings. I'm probably a golfer now. I met my wife and started to calm down and cheer up a bit. But I still play a self-harmer onstage; especially in Pappy's. I can't play actual golf, though. I'm terrible. Tom and Ben from Pappy's both play golf. But I'll let them tell you what category they fit into.

12. Who is your favourite person ever and why - not including family or friends or other comedians?

Bit of a cheat this one (as he started as a comedian) but probably Alan Bennett. I love his books and his plays and his jumpers and his outlook on life and his voice and his turns of phrase and his hair. I just love him.

  1. Do you keep your drawers tidy?

No, but you don't have to. That's why they are designed that way. So no one can see how messy they are inside. They're drawers, they're not trays!

I'm not sure that's a strong enough line to leave on. Please come and see my show. There's nothing in it about drawers.
