Interview: Rarely Asked Questions – Kieran Hodgson: Page 2 of 2

Kieran Hodgson
6. What do your parents  think of your job?

They think it's brilliant, and certainly a relief from my one-time threat to try and become a train driver. They've always been unconditionally encouraging of things I've done and dad unfailingly records my radio appearances onto CD and makes a little album cover for them. I'm mainly doing it for those two, to be honest.

7. What’s the worst thing about being a comedian?

The see-saw between crushing self-doubt and eye-watering self-confidence. If I could just relax a little and live by the seaside it would all be happy days.

8. I think you are very good at what you do (that’s why I’m asking these questions). What do you think of you?

I think I'm very lazy but can respond well to deadlines and am good at learning from past mistakes. I'm punctual and well turned-out, and my last two shows have been a decent contribution to the whole mess. This does not mean I'm certain to make anything else good in the future, but I'm very willing.

9. How much do you earn and how much would you like to earn?

I was brought up not to discuss such things. I would like to earn much more.

10. How important is luck in terms of career success – have you had lucky breaks?

I am going to be very Majorite here and say that luck is nowhere near as important as persistence and work. I have had a few lucky breaks which, to a man, went down the toilet. Working hard on my own thing has given me something that I can trust. Though that does leave me with only myself to blame. Maybe not lucky breaks, then, but general periods of luck that wax and wane.

11. Alan Davies has said that comedians fall into two categories - golfers and self-harmers. The former just get on with life, the latter are tortured artists. Which are you – or do you think you fit into a third category?

Oh I'm a golfer through and through, if I'm making the right inference. I hate golf but I dream of nothing better than a nice quiet life, doing lots of walks and making a survey of local pubs that have been recommended by CAMRA. I've just decided that the quickest route to that is to go through the emotional and financial minefield of showbiz.

12. Who is your favourite person ever and why – not including family or friends or other comedians?

Gustav Mahler. I listen to his music every day and dream of writing a show about him. Mad old guy who put almost everyone's back up, but the results speak for themselves.

13. Do you keep your drawers tidy and if not why not?

It really depends. Most likely not as I get distracted quite easily by my life.
